A Wet and Cool Trend is Ahead!

This weekend has been a nice break from the heat where most of the region has steered clear of the 90s. A few isolated areas may see 90 degrees by the end of today, but will quickly cool off due to afternoon thunderstorms and growing cloud cover. These thunderstorms will continue to work through the region and will be moving out of region in the late overnight hours. The severe threat remains low, but we cannot rule out the chances of a brief severe thunderstorms as we go into the evening with the biggest severe hazard being wind gusts near 60 mph. Due to the isolated nature of these pop-up thunderstorms, rainfall totals will not be consistent through out the region. Due to an abundant amount of moisture in the atmosphere, these storms could produce heavy rainfall that could cause localized flash flooding going into the evening. Based on the latest model guidance, isolated areas in extreme Northwest Georgia could see up to 3 inches of rain tonight. Areas around Atlanta and Athens could see up to 2 inches of rain by morning. The rest of the region will see spotty totals of an inch or less. Thunderstorms and showers have already started firing off in North Georgia and are expected to move out of our area during the overnight hours after midnight. Our overnight low temperature will remain in the low 70s tonight as the dewpoints continue to linger around 70 degrees for our region.

Rainfall chances will not relent much tomorrow as afternoon scattered thunderstorms are expected for much of us with highs hovering in the upper 80s. Not much will be changing as we go through this upcoming week. Most of the region will remain in the upper 80s this week, with a few sparse areas reaching 90 degrees. These are below average temperatures for the month of July, where the average temperature is around 92 degrees for much of our region. Rainfall chances will consist of scattered thunderstorms much like what we saw this weekend, with the highest chances in the afternoon hours.
