Severe Weather Potential on the Menu

Good afternoon, Dawg Nation,

Unfortunately, for you sun lovers out there, we have been experiencing overcast skies over the past few days, which has kept our temperatures on the lower side. This pattern is expected to continue this afternoon, as temperatures are not expected to break out of the 40s in northeast Georgia, low to mid 50s will be present across the rest of the north Georgia area. A warmup is expected tomorrow ahead of a storm system that will help to bring warmer air up from the Gulf of Mexico, causing high temperatures to increase by about 8-10 degrees from today to tomorrow across north Georgia.

This post, however, brings with it the chance of a few rounds of showers and thunderstorms across the state of Georgia in the coming days. Starting with tonight, a broken line of showers will move into the western part of the state around 6-7pm or so and push through the metro area in the following hours. These showers are not expected to be severe as they roll through this evening, causing just a few hours of wet weather before moving out in the overnight hours.

Saturday night and Sunday bring the chance of strong and potentially severe storms. A storm system is expected to push through in the early morning hours on Sunday. With it comes the possibility for strong thunderstorms, with the main target for severe weather relegated to central and east Georgia. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a level 2 out of 5 slight risk for severe weather for areas east of the metro-Atlanta area and much of east-central Georgia stretching down towards the Georgia coastline, with the main threats being locally heavy downpours, strong, damaging winds that could knock over trees, and the possibility of a few tornadoes. The rest of the state is under a level 1 out of 5 marginal risk for thunderstorms, where some storms could be severe and have strong winds, and the chance of a spin-up tornado cannot be ruled out. By the end of the weekend when all is said and done, the majority of north Georgia could see anywhere from 1-2 inches of rainfall.

In the case of any severe weather in your area, be sure to have multiple ways to receive critical warnings issued by the National Weather Service. Stay tuned for updates from your local TV news station, the National Weather Service, and the WeatherDawgs as this severe threat materializes to keep you and your family safe!
