Good afternoon, Dawg Fans,
A potent storm system is setting up over Dixie Alley as of around midday today, which is bringing the chance for very strong thunderstorms to the Deep South this afternoon and into the overnight hours tonight. As for us here in north Georgia, we'll see cloudy skies for the majority of the day with temperatures into the upper 50s in the northern part of the metro-area, and low 60s to the south, with perhaps a chance for an isolated shower out ahead of the main show that will be making its way into the state in the early morning hours tomorrow. A large and strong squall line will be coming through sometime between 3 and 5am. Exact timing is still a question mark at this point as it is still too far out, but the impacts will remain the same.
Increasing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will continue to infiltrate much of the state, which is providing ample fuel for the approaching storm. This overnight squall line will bring with it the chance for strong, straight-line damaging winds and the possibility of a quick spin up tornado imbedded in the line. In response, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has upgraded north Georgia's severe weather risk to a level 2 out of 5 slight risk for almost the entirety of the state of Georgia.
It is very important to note that this system will be trekking across the state in the overnight hours tonight, when many people will be asleep, and their guard will be down. It is imperative that you stay weather aware this evening and through the night. Make a plan now to prepare for the event that conditions deteriorate; this could include keeping your devices charged in the case the power goes out. Be sure to have an alert system that will wake you up in the event severe weather warning are issued in your area as well. Be prepared and stay safe out there, Dawg Nation!
